The Discipline of Worship

Authentic

Lesson 7
The Discipline of Worship
1 Cor. 13:12  -  Rev. 4-5  -  John 4:24 - Psalm 89:1

Worship is the most powerful, joy-producing, hope-sustaining, life-altering thing we do.

When worship is directed to an unworthy person or an unworthy object, we call it idolatry.
Exodus 20:3 - God is first

Worship is Powerful
  •  To fail at worship is the greatest human failure of which we are capable because it robs us of what we were created by God to experience.
  • Worship: to fall or prostrate yourself before someone on the ground.
    • A picture of humility and subservience
  •  Worship is the conscious, direct, specific adoration of someone or something greater than ourselves.
    • There is a difference between worshipful and worship

Worship is joy-producing
Worship is hope-sustaining
Worship is life-altering
  • In order to see the Lord fill what is empty in me, quench what is thirsty in me, satisfy what is hungry in my soul, I have to be exposed for who I really am.
    • Such was the case of the Samaritan women by the well - John 4:13-18, 19-20.
Growing in Worship
  • Avoid debate
    • Worship isn't a mountain issue; it's a motive issue.
    • Worship isn't a where thing; it's a how thing.
    • Worship isn't a place; it's a pattern.
  • Start with salvation. You can't worship a God you don't know.
    • Salvation: turn from sin and put your life under His control
    • John 4:22 - 2 Cor. 5:21
    • Move from textbooks to experience (something you know)
  • We should never get tired of our story.
    • Tell it! Share it!
  • God will not let go of you.
  • Enter in fully. - John 4:23
    • ALL IN
Worship in Spirit and Truth -

John 4:24-26 "24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.  25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.  26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
  1. Vertical
    • Sing to the Lord, not about Him
  2. Simple
    • Isaiah 6:3 - Rev 5:12
  3. Emotive
    • Feel what you are singing and saying
  4. Physical
    • Hands - Feet - Psalm 71:23 - Psalm 3:3
Focus on Jesus Christ
  • All that we are should be expressed in worship.
  • John 4:24-26 ......."I know that Messiah is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." ...... "I who speak to you am He."
Discipline - Delight - Desire
  • Follow the Disciplines of being Authentic - Bible Study, Prayer, Fasting, Fellowship, Service, Worship - Psalm 119:97 .... "Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long."
  • God will respond with delight and honor your desires.  - Psalm 37:4 .... "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."
